What is Computer Memory (RAM)?

Computer memory or random access memory (RAM) is the short-term data storage of your system; it stores the information that your computer is actively using so that it may be accessed rapidly. The more apps that are running on your system, the more RAM you will require.

Features of RAM

RAM memory contains lots of aspects that must be explored in an attempt to acquire a complete understanding of the subject.

  1. RAM is the internal memory of a computer. It is the computer system's primary memory. Items from the hard disc are loaded into RAM memory for convenient access by the computer system's CPU. It is equivalent to rough paper used for mathematical calculations, whereas the hard drive is related to the "fair" sheet where the finished work is placed once the calculations are completed.

Types of RAM

There are two types of computer RAM.

Static RAM

Static RAM does not need to be updated on a regular basis in order to keep the information contained in it. It does not require any additional power to prevent power leakage, making it faster than DRAM.

Six CMOS transistors combine to form one SRAM memory cell. However, there is a disadvantage. SRAM takes far more chips to store the same amount of data than DRAM (since it uses six transistors). This feature raises the production cost significantly and is hence employed in high-speed cache memory.

Features of Static RAM

The importance of static random access memory as the memory of choice for cache memory cannot be overstated. Here are some of its features.

  • The access time for SRAM is roughly 10 nanoseconds.
  • It is much faster than DRAM since the memory cells do not need to be refreshed on a regular basis.
  • It consumes more power, though, because it employs a bi-stable latch circuit and requires a constant power supply.
  • It is expensive and exists between the processor and main memory on processors.
  • It is long-lasting.

SRAM, as a component of computer RAM, is absolutely necessary but costly.

Dynamic RAM

One transistor and one capacitor make up dynamic RAM. A huge memory chunk is made up of many of these tiny cells. Because a capacitor is used, it must be recharged on a regular basis to keep the charge. Because capacitors leak, they must be recharged as soon as they are read and written back.

Features of Dynamic RAM

Computer with DRAM As a less expensive memory solution, RAM is useful. It is usually the primary memory.

  • DRAM, on the other hand, has a substantially faster access time, roughly 50 nanoseconds.
  • Because memory cells must be replenished on a regular basis, it is slower than SRAM.
  • Because the information is held in a single capacitor, it uses less power.
  • DRAM is less expensive than SRAM.
  • Because one memory cell consists of one transistor and one capacitor, it takes up less space on the same-sized device and provides more memory than an SRAM of comparable size.

The most cost-effective memory is DRAM random access memory.

What is RAM used for?

Many of your computer's basic activities rely on RAM, including loading software, accessing the internet, updating a spreadsheet, and playing the most recent game. Memory also allows you to switch between professions quickly, remembering where you were in the previous one when you move on to the next. On average, the more memory you have, the better.

When you’re finished with a project or leaving for the day, you can put some or all the projects in the filing cabinet for safekeeping. The filing cabinet that works with your desk to track your projects is your storage drive (hard disc or solid-state drive).

How Much RAM Do I Have?

If you are using a Windows-based PC

  1. In the Start menu Locate the Computer icon.
  2. Select Properties from the menu by right-clicking the Computer icon.
  3. The installed memory amount, measured in MB (megabytes) or GB (gigabytes), can be found under System and beneath the processor model.

If you are using a MAC System
Select About This Mac from the Apple menu.
The System Information page will appear once you select System Report.
Click Memory, listed under the Hardware section.
